What was the Harlem Renaissance?
"As African Americans came to the Northern cities in the 1920s, they created a new social and cultural landscape." The 1920's were marked with tragic and prosperous times for the United States of America. In the early 1920's, the economy witnessed what was to be called the "Roarin' Twenties". This decade exposed ideals familiar with our current time - Women's Rights, transportation, and jazz music. A "Cultural Civil War" also had its mark in the early 1920's. During "The Great Migration", millions of African Americans sought life in the North to escape economic difficulties and harsh laws directed to promote unequal segregation in the South. With this influx of African Americans to the Northern Cities, the African American culture becomes a topic of interest in the news all across America that lasted decades to follow.
